Twitter – time your business joined the flock

Twitter is a low-cost yet effective way to engage with your customers. As Twitter is used mainly to exchange knowledge, your business can easily benefit from that information interchange. So why wait to jump in?

Before you start though consider the following general pointers to help you plan your Twitter presence.

1. Define what you want to get out of your business Twitter account.

2. Engage in the process -Twitter gives you just 140 characters in which to communicate. Use them wisely – project a personality that remains appropriate to your business. Use humour, images and videos by all means but remember this is not your personal channel for communications.

3. Put the right staff on the job – your staff may be net savvy but they may not be mature enough to step up to become the required online moderator between your business and its stakeholders.

4. Develop your corporate Twitter voice – allocate a human identity for your company and give it the right blend of friendliness and professionalism.

5. Be discerning about who you Follow (and are Followed By) – Your profile is open for all to see, so your business will be judged by the company it keeps online. Apply good housekeeping principles to manage your lists and research more contacts to develop them further.

Twitter has gone mainstream – isn’t it time your business jumped in too?
