Four blogging sins

Blogging is taking central stage in business digital marketing thanks to the focus on quality content by Google. With every new release of its search algorithm Google is tightening the noose on sloppy content.

Well written blogs featuring original content help your website rate well so it’s worth investing time to get it right.

Here’s a quick list of things to avoid.

1. Don’t preach, inform

A blog is not a digital soap box. Avoid the temptation to spruik your business and its products in an overt way. The promotional content needs to be kept to a minimum. You must instead deliver value for the visitor. This can be done by providing useful information that is specific to your business. After all who knows your business better than you do?

2. Too much guff not enough guts

The ideal length of the blog can be a point of contention. Many think blogs must not be too long. However, you should remember people don’t mind scrolling if it’s worth their while. There is no point stuffing the blog with guff to pad it out. Let the topic determine the length of the blog (within the bounds of a standard length for consistency).

3. Looks can kill

If the blog’s appearance is unappealing, the quality of the content won’t save it. Visitors just won’t stay to read it if it’s difficult to decipher, too busy or too ugly. So put some effort into layouts. Standardise the appearance of your blog to ensure consistent branding.

4. Missing the basics

Most people are now familiar with the established navigational devices found on websites. As a result, there is an expectation of certain fundamental navigational principles that you should consider. Visitors can get thrown if they can’t read about you in “About Us” or can’t easily contact you. They also don’t like losing their way to your home page from within the depths of your blog. Don’t overlook these basics.

Blogging is becoming a crucial component of digital marketing for all types of businesses. With a bit forethought and planning your business can also start to see the rewards.
